Atlas folio, black linen portfolio with illustrated title plate
Provenance
The photographer to Douglas Saputo, New York
Condition
This impressive portfolio is in overall good to very good condition. Many of the prints are gently rippled and there are a few scattered handling creases. Each print is taped to a gray overmat or to a backboard along the upper margin edge.
The black linen portfolio box is soiled and stained overall and there are several old adhesive remnants. The lower edges are torn along the right and left sides and there are significant losses to the linen in these areas, revealing the cardboard base. The lower portion of the box has liquid drips and is discolored. The illustrated title plate has several liquid drips and stains. The gray paste-down in the interior is stained in a few places. The title page is slightly discolored and there are a few small tears along the edges.

Catalogue Note
This work was commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1981 for Turbeville's book Unseen Versailles. Turbeville spent a winter exploring the empty and unrestored staterooms and gardens devoid of tourists. The result is a suite of photographs that capture the timeless atmosphere of the majestic palace, embued with Turbeville’s signature haunting romanticism.
This portfolio was given to Douglas Saputo by Turbeville in thanks for his assistance in producing this project.
