flush-mounted, signed in pencil and with the photographer's credit stamp on the reverse, 1948 (LIFE, 31 January 1949, pp. 66-7; Edward Steichen, Memorable Life Photographs, unpaginated)
Condition
This impressive, large photograph, on semi-glossy paper and flush-mounted to board, is in generally very good condition.
There are tiny-to-small impressions overall, some of which may break the emulsion. Upon close inspection, the following are visible: creases, including a 2-inch crease perpendicular to the upper edge; and a small raised area, likely a result of the mounting process. In raking light, deposits of original retouching and scattered spots of indeterminate nature are visible overall. There is wear to the edges and corners.
The reverse of the mount is soiled.

Catalogue Note
'To me, watching them wind through the storm, it seemed much like seeing some of the famous old war paintings come to life, during the early battles across Europe' (David Douglas Duncan, quoted in LIFE, 1949, p. 67).
The early photograph offered here is believed to be the largest print of this image to appear at auction. A print of it was selected by Edward Steichen for the 1951 Museum of Modern Art exhibition Memorable Life Photographs and it is illustrated in the accompanying catalogue.
