Clars Auction Gallery, Oakland, 19 September 2015, Lot 6321

Condition

This gum bichromate print on Japanese tissue is in overall excellent condition. It is tipped to its original mount at each corner. The margins are unevenly trimmed. Upon very close examination under raking light, there is a faint yellow stain in the lower left corner. The very slight undulation in tonality and occasional pulp fibers visible in the paper surface are inherent to the gum bichromate process and tissue used. The mount has several sharp creases, including a diagonal crease across the upper right corner and a larger diagonal crease in the lower left quadrant. There are scattered faint stains, soiling and a tiny loss at the upper left corner. The area on the mount around the perimeter of the image is soiled. The reverse of the mount is stained overall and there are a few scattered foxmarks. 'Rodin,' '$25.00,' '17' (encircled), '73.27,' and 'RX 8943/28' are written in pencil in an unidentified hand. The Art Institute of Chicago collection label is affixed to the reverse of the mat, and '1973.27 / RX8943/28' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand.
