a unique object, manipulated Polaroid SX-70 print, dated and with annotations in ink on the reverse, framed, a Pace Gallery label on the reverse, 1973

Provenance

Pace Gallery, New York, 1974

Exhibited

Pace Gallery, New York, Lucas Samaras, Photo-Transformations, March - April 1974

Condition

This unique Polaroid print is in generally excellent condition. The colors appear vibrant, with no apparent fading. In the present print, Samaras executed considerable, delicate handwork with a stylus or similar object during the Polaroid's development to manipulate the surface. Upon close examination in raking light, impressions and a few scattered surface scratches are visible, presumably a result of the photographer's manipulation. The emulsion is slightly cracked in the upper left corner and it is faintly soiled with a few orange deposits at the lower right quadrant. On the reverse, '640 E' and 'P [circled]' are annotated in ink. The date is written in an unidentified hand in ink on a label on the reverse.
