Catalogue Note

Renowned war photographer Robert Capa has documented some of the most momentous conflicts of the twentieth century. His iconic images of the Spanish Civil War illustrate the events which drastically affected Spain’s history for much of the twentieth century. His 1939 photograph, Barcelona, appears to contrast with his evocative imagery of the conflict of that period; the movement of the woman and dog seems joyful and light. However, this was a period in which Barcelona was heavily bombed by the Fascists, so whilst this photograph appears to be a natural, everyday moment, it is more likely that it illustrates a woman running for shelter during the bombings.  The fact the Capa ventured out himself to capture such a moment demonstrates his desire to document even the most dangerous aspects of the conflict.
