Catalogue Note

Julia Margaret Cameron used her family as models in historical and literary photographic representations, as well as in personal images. Her grandchildren are depicted in much of her work, often with religious connotations. This photograph is of her granddaughter, Adeline Norman. The melancholic atmosphere and Adeline’s slightly distant expression are perhaps due to the death of her mother, Cameron’s daughter, that year. Her daughter, Julia Norman, gave Cameron her first camera, and the grief of her untimely death no doubt affected Cameron’s family photography.
