Catalogue Note
Only a few years after she took her first photograph, Julia Margaret Cameron captured this photograph, Miss Huth, which shows the considerable influence pre-Raphaelite artists had on her. Her portraits convey a sense of intimacy with the sitter, who are often closely cropped around the face with soft lighting. The far-away looks and lack of eye contact with the photographer is a distinctive feature of her portraiture.
