Catalogue Note

Gainsborough Dupont painted a large group portrait of the Elder Brethren of Trinity House.1 We are grateful to Hugh Belsey for noting that the subject of the present portrait closely resembles the second sitter on the right in the large group portrait. Dupont took a number of subsequent commissions for portraits from individuals in the group, and the present lot is probably one such commission.
