Catalogue Note

Gainsborough Dupont painted a large group portrait of the Elder Brethren of Trinity House.¹ We are grateful to Hugh Belsey for noting that the subject of the present portrait closely resembles the second sitter on the right in the large group portrait. Dupont took a number of subsequent commissions for portraits from individuals in the group, and the present lot is probably one such commission.
