Condition

The canvas has a firm relining, and the paint surface is clean with a slightly uneven and discoloured varnish. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals careful retouching to the exposed lining of the sitter's coat and sleeve, as well as to his right cheek, bridge of his nose, forehead and around his eye. Other small retouchings are scattered in the background. In overall fair condition. The English carved and gilt wood frame is in good condition.
