Condition

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The soft wood panel has rigid fixed supports to the reverse between which the panel has been painted. The panel is made up from 3 – 4 panels with 3 detectable joins. The support is stable with slight movement down the left hand vertical join and undulations across the surface. The paint layer is raised in some areas with visible instability. Previous paint loss and subsequent restoration can be seen to the right side of the Virgin's face and lower mantle, the child's face , torso, left arm and right leg. The cloth behind the monk on the left has had paint loss replaced. A considerable proportion of the restoration is excessive and insensitive and is discoloured. There are significant areas of the composition where the paint is well preserved and in good original condition. Removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the overall tonality.
