Literature
The Most Honourable The 4th Marquess of Bristol, deceased, Ickworth, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Valuation for probate of pictures, drawings and miniatures, 1952, p. 481 (as A. Carracci).
Condition
The canvas is relined. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There are some scattered retouchings throughout the painting, visible to the naked eye. Ultra violet inspection reveals an uneven layer of varnish and some more retouching to all four margins. Furthermore there is minor retouching throughout the lower half of the canvas. There is some delicate restoration to old impressions caused by the previous stretcher bars. Overall the picture is in good condition. The work is offered in a carved gilt wood frame, with some minor losses.
