Description
- Jusepe de Ribera, called Lo Spagnoletto
- Saint Onophrius
- oil on canvas
- 130 x 101.9 cm.
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie’s, 8 July 2005, lot 76 (as circle of Jusepe de Ribera).
Condition
The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is sightly unclean and the varnish is discoloured. There is a 10 cm diagonal scratch in the saint's proper right hand, visible to the naked eye. Ultra violet inspection reveals an even varnish and a fine and intricate pattern of restoration to conceal minor losses throughout the saint's arm, chest and face. There is extensive restoration around his head and in the background, in particular along the thread pattern of the canvas. In his beard there is a thick 'figure of 8' pattern of retouching. In the upper left there is a solid 12 x 12 cm area of restoration. Overall the condition of the work is stable. The painting is offered in a parcel-gilt plain carved frame.
