Description

  • Roman School, early 17th century
  • Portrait of a young man
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The paining is a fragment, inset into the canvas, with additions along the edges. The paint surface appears streaky probably due to the preparation of the canvas. Otherwise the paint surface is relatively clean. The colours have slightly discoloured as a result of the faded varnish. To the naked eye the additions to the edges (in particular to the sides and upper margin) are visible. Inspection under ultra violet inspection reveals a thick layer of varnish in the original section, excluding the added edges. Furthermore some minor retouching is visible in the hair, the left check and the right side of the mouth, the right side of the nose and to the drapery. Overall the painting is in good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in very good condition.
