Description

  • Alessandro Magnasco, called il Lissandrino
  • Jacob wrestling with the angel
  • oil on paper, laid on canvas

Literature

A. Orlando, Dipinti genovesi. Dal Cinquecento al Settecento. Ritrovamenti dal collezionismo privato, Turin 2010, p. 186, reproduced in colour (as Carlo Antonio Tavella).

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface appears clean and the varnish is clear and even. Ultra violet inspection also confirms the even varnish. There is extensive, sensitively executed restoration throughout, in particular in the sky. There is a 3 cm wide strip of restoration which runs the length of the right hand margin. There are two further vertical lines of restoration to the right of the figure of the angel, measuring 10 cm, and 5 cm respectively. There is also some strengthening to Jacob's cape, and to the drapery of both figures. The work is offered unframed.
