Condition

The panel is flat and uncradled, and has been beveled on two sides. The panel has been composed of two horizontal planks, joined with square butterfly joints. The paint surface is unclean and the varnish is discoloured. There is some old restoration visible to the naked eye throughout in particular to the joint between the two panels, and there is a small loss to the paint surface in the bank on the lower margin just beneath the basket. Furthermore some water staining is visible in the sky in the upper left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a milky varnish which conceals any older restoration. There are some old, small areas of restoration to the margins.

Catalogue Note

This painting exemplifies the monochrome palette of brown and yellow tones, which is so characteristic of the artist's middle period in the early 1640s. The pair of towers and the buildings beside them are found in other paintings by Van Goyen, including that of vertical format in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.1
