Provenance

In the collection of the present owner's family probably since at least the 1960s.

Condition

The canvas has an old lining. The paint surface is in good condition overall although in localised areas is a little worn. There are some strengthenings and retouchings to certain blooms such as to the two chrysanthemums lower left and to the pink rose immediately to their right. There are some discoloured retouchings to certain darker regions of the composition and to the background; these can be seen quite clearly in the very central upper section. The varnish is old and opaque and to a certain extent inhibits inspection under ultraviolet light. The painting would benefit from a light surface clean. Sold in a gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for proposing the attribution to Carel Fonteyn. He notes in particular similarities between the present work and a still life by Fonteyn that is signed and dated 1665, last recorded with François Heim, Paris, in 1964.1
