Condition
In overall very good condition. The panel is formed of a single plank, which is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very few retouchings. There are small spots along the centre of the left and right margins, and along the upper margin, as well as very few, pin-prick sized retouchings and small lines of strengthening scattered in the figures. Offered in a plain, ebonised, Dutch-style wood frame in very good condition.

Catalogue Note
Several elements of the present composition derive from Van de Velde's sketches, which he often used as models. The two principal figures on horseback in the foreground are found respectively in two drawings, dated 1627, in the Kröller-Möller Museum, Otterloo.1
