Anonymous sale, Christie's London, 10 July 2002, lot 17, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

In overall fair condition. The panel is formed of two vertical planks, joined by a series of batons in the centre. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is short vertical crack running down from the right of the upper margin, measuring approx. 8 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the central join and in the sitter's face and hands. There are spot retouchings throughout her sleeves, and scattered in the dark band of her dress, as well as in the table and parts of the green background. The gilt cup is largely free of any intervention and the impasto paintwork remains intact. Offered in a later parcel gilt and carved wood frame in the Gothic style.
