Description

  • Tuscan School, circa 1450
  • A diptych: The Annunciation
  • tempera on panel, in an applied frame

Condition

In overall fair condition. The paint surfaces are dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The panel with the angel is made up of two vertical planks, which are uncradled and very slightly bowed. The join has split down the centre of the front of the panel, resulting in some paint losses. There is a small scratch towards the hem of the angel's robes, and retouching to a loss in his face and to the left of his wing. There is a further loss in the lower right corner. The panel with the Madonna is also made up of two vertical planks, joined with butterfly batons. There are two losses on the lower margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the panel joins in both halves of the diptych, and some small retouchings in the Madonna's robes, but little other intervention.
