Description

  • Relief with the Transfiguration
  • ivory, on a red velvet covered mount
  • Spanish or Spanish Colonial, late 17th century
after Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael

Condition

Overall the condition of the ivory is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age, with dirt in the crevices. The relief is carved in sections, and some of the joints around the figures and at the sides are open but stable. The two figures framing Christ at the top are slightly loose. There is also splitting to the ivory, consistent with the material; some of the open splits and joints have been filled, and there is glue residue visible in areas. There are a few minor losses, including to the kneeling woman's drapery, the leaves of the tree, and the proper right foot of the left figure at the top. There appears to be a replaced section to the foliage on the right side at the top, and there is a restoration to the standing figure on the far left side at the bottom. The velvet covered mount is in good condition with some wear, including fraying in the bottom right corner. A wood board is visible at the back.
