Description
- Infant Saint John the Baptist
- polychromed wood
- Circle of José Risueño (1665-1732) Spanish, Granada, circa 1700
Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are some small losses to the gilding and polychromy, including to the saint’s proper right index finger. John’s proper left little finger is lost. The top of the rear left tree is lost. The top of the rear right tree detaches and there are old glue restorations. One of the mouldings on the left of the base at the front is lost. There is minor stable splitting to the wood consistent with the base, in particular to the back of John’s drapery and through the base and in the back of the head. The Cross could be replaced. The sculpture would likely benefit from a professional cleaning.
