Description

  • Saint Michael slaying the dragon
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • Spanish, Castile, circa 1500

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The lance and the dragon's head are later replacements. An attribute in the proper left hand appears to be lost. Now-lost wings would have been inserted into the Saint's back. There is extensive evidence of past worming at the back and around the edges of the terrasse, having led to some losses. There is also a loss to the saint's armour at the proper right hip, and his hair on the proper right side. There is some stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, notably to the dragon's head and haunches, its proper right hind leg, and the terrasse. There is wear to the gilding and polychromy throughout, including flaking and craquelure, and several areas with losses. Some of the polychromy and gilding has been refreshed, including in the face. There are particular losses to the polychromy to the skirt of armour and to the dragon. There are reattachments at the dragon's ears.
