Description
- Virgin and Child Enthroned
- wood, with traces of gilding and polychromy
- Spanish, circa 1300
with a later panel to the reverse, probably 16th century, with coat of arms
Condition
Considering the age of the sculpture the condition of the wood is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The back section is a different piece of wood and is likely to be a later addition. The polychromy and gilding probably date to the 16th or 17th century but could be later. There are losses to the polychromy throughout, particularly at the front, though it is relatively well preserved at the back. There is non active worming to the wood, in particular at the back of the head. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, in particular to the back of the head and to the front down the middle. The Virgin’s proper right arm is lost and part of Christ’s face is lost, including the nose. Part of the lower section of the sculpture ion the proper right side is carved separately. Christ’s proper right thumb is lost, as is the crucifix surmounting his orb. There are various small losses, including to the ground at either side of the throne. There are a few smaller losses, including to the Virgin’s proper right ear. There is an iron pin in the Virgin’s back and some further metal pins to the interior and underside.
