  • Infant Christ in a baldachin
  • partially polychromed ivory, fabric, gilt metal, and seed pearls, with a glazed gilt and ebonised wood baldachin lined with red fabric

Condition

Overall the condition of the piece is good, with wear and some dirt consistent with age. There are a few minor losses to the ivory, notably to the proper left fingers; and one of the scrolls of the base is lost. The ivory is carved in sections and joints are visible, including at the shoulders; there is glue residue throughout the joints of the base. There are re-attachments to the Child's legs. There is wear to the polychromy on the face. There is wear to the fabric, including minor fraying. A few of the seed pearls appear to be lost. The hat is loose. There is some oxidation to the metal. The figure and base are not attached to the baldachin. The wood baldachin is in good condition, with particular wear to the black paintwork, and some chips to the gilding, in particular at the corners. There is dirt to the fabric lining throughout, and wear to the edges. The underside of the dress is incribed: 'M. Josepha' in ink

Catalogue Note

Ivory figures representing the Infant Christ, of the so-called Bräutigam-Typus, were produced by nuns in Southern Germany in the 18th century. A closely comparable example is at the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. no. 1975.437.4a–e).
