Description
- Pyxis
- gilt and champlevé enamelled copper, set with glass cabochons
- French, Limoges, circa 1225-1275
7.5cm., 3in.
Condition
Overall the condition of the pyxis is good, with minor dirt and some wear to the surface consistent with age. There are some small losses to the enamel, including around the edge of the lid and to the back below the hinge. The latter loss may be due to a knock, as there is also a dent to the copper. There is some oxidation to the copper around the hinge and the lock. There is a small tear to the copper on the left hand side of the hinge and the hinge is slightly loose, but stable. There is a small dent to the copper setting of one of the glass cabochons, causing the glass to be slightly loose in the setting. There is a stable break to one of the cabochons. The cross that would originally have surmounted the pyxis is now lost.
