Catalogue Note
Gainsborough frequently populates his landscape paintings and drawings with animals and figures that create movement and direction in his composition. This finished drawing is very similar in subject matter to a large varnished drawing at Buscot Park that was probably exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1772 and it must date from roughly the same date.1 Technically it has the dry, broken strokes that briefly appear in his paintings painted around this date. We are grateful to Hugh Belsey, M.B.E. for his help when cataloguing this work.
