Laid down. Faint horizontal creases visible along upper edge. Spots of discoloration in upper right, upper left, and lower left corners. Medium remains strong.

Catalogue Note
The composition derives from del Sarto's fresco, now destroyed, painted for the Chiostro dei Morti, in Santissima Annunziata, Florence. As Jeremy Wood has described (loc. cit.), Rubens made or reworked two drawn copies of this fresco, one in the Louvre, the other formerly in the Normand Collection.1 Erasmus Quellinus is believed to have owned one or other of these copies, and it has therefore been suggested that the present drawing is a copy that he himself made, after the Rubens drawing in his own collection; the attribution to Quellinus was endorsed by the late Michael Jaffé.
