Description

  • Job Adriaensz. Berckheyde
  • A study of a woman holding a glass in her right hand, her left hand outstretched
  • Red chalk within pen and brown ink framing lines;
    bears numbering and attribution in black chalk, verso:  496 / P.P. Rubens and deleted attribution:  G. Terburg

Provenance

Carl Rolas du Rosey (L.2237)

Catalogue Note

The red chalk figure studies of Gerrit Berckheyde are very familiar, those of his genre painter elder brother, Job, far less so, though two examples are in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (inv. nos. Z. 2541, Z. 2542).  The figure and facial type seems, however, consistent with the artist's paintings.
