This study for an entire altar flanked by two sculpture niches was first attributed to Antonio Vassilacchi by Roger Rearick. As Peter Fuhring noted, a good comparison is provided by a drawing attributed to Aliense in the Louvre, although that sheet represents a more elaborate altar, and seems perhaps to have been made for a processional banner.¹
