Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 11 December 1986, lot 124 (as Follower of Luis Tristán de Escamilla).
Condition
The copper plate is flat. The paint surface is stable with a very thick and discoloured varnish. The paint surface appears to be in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that the space between the sitter’s left arm and his body has been strengthened. There are a few other minor strengthenings: in the palm he holds in his left hand and in the delineation of his fingers on his right hand. Otherwise there are only a handful of minor retouchings mostly in the background. Offered in a composite gilt wood frame with some small losses.
