Condition

Canvas: Original canvas. The canvas appears sound. There is some very slight undulation to the canvas in the lower left corner, only visible upon very close inspection. There is a very light layer of surface dirt to the work. Subject to the above the work is in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals sensitive retouchings along the lower edge and in the bottom left and right corners, as well as small specks of retouching in the lower left and upper left quadrants, with one or two flecks potentially elsewhere. The work is held within a moulded and painted wood frame with a white slip. Pencil Study: The sheet is not laid down. The top edge of the sheet is uneven, possibly inherent to the material, and the bottom edge is evenly cut. The sheet is very slightly cockled in places. There are Artist's pinholes in all four corners. There are two small tears, approximately 1cm. long, running perpendicular from the edge of the sheet at the right and bottom edges. There is a tear to the sheet running vertically up from the lower edge, measuring approximately 15cm. There is evidence of old adhesive tape to the reverse of the tear. There is a horizontal crease running from the centre of the left edge, with some associated staining. There are very light creases at the top right and bottom left corners. The sheet is time stained throughout, and there are spots of foxing throughout with one or two further spots of staining. There is possibly some fading to the medium. The work is held within a simple wood frame under glass. Please telephone the department on +44 207 6424 if you have any questions.
