Description

  • John Craxton, R.A.
  • Boot in an Estuary
  • signed
  • pastel on paper
  • 32.5 by 38cm.; 12¾ by 15in.
  • Executed in 1944.

Provenance

The Artist, from whom acquired by the previous owner in the 1940s or 1950s, and thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

The sheet is sound and is not laid down but has been attached to the backing board at the centre of the top edge. The top and the bottom edge are unevenly cut, not visible in the current mount. There are artist pinholes along the top edge of the work. The sheet cockles slightly. There are some minor scuffs to the edges of the sheet, which correspond to the mounting. There appear to be two tiny water stains, one to the toe of the boot and one to the top of the boot, which may have happened in the Artist's studio. Otherwise the work is in excellent original condition with strong passages of pastel and bright colours throughout. Held under glass in a simple gilt frame with a grey mount.
