Catalogue Note

A prolific maestro of light and form, Fernando Amorsolo was undeniably one of the most influential artists in Filipino art.  Figures with Cockerel is a charismatic work depicting a quintessential Filipino scene while exemplifying Amorsolo’s training in Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics. In 1917 under the sponsorship of businessman Enrique Zobel, Amorsolo went to Spain to study at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. While abroad Amorsolo spent days visiting museums where the masterworks of Goya, Velasquez and El Greco inspired the young artist to hone his technique. He learned to draw out the most heightened contrasts, enrich his colours with warmth and sharpen his painterly style. Viewers admire the product of these influences in Figures with Cockerel, one of the artist’s pre-war paintings of bucolic village lifestyle. The dramatic lighting and anatomical sophistication elevate the simplicity of Filipino rural life into a pure and even hallowed encounter with Amorsolo’s beloved country.
