Catalogue Note

Flavio Biondo's Decades (on the history of Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire) were written between 1439 and 1453. Pius II felt the work was too lengthy and lacking style, and himself wrote this summarised version of it; this version was used by Platina for his Lives of the Popes and by Machiavelli for his Florentine History. Pius's abbreviation was printed before the original, which first appeared in print in 1483, and the 1484 edition included Pius II's summary.
