Description

  • Johan Jakob Biedermann
  • Landscape with ploughmen and horses in the canton of Valais
  • signed in monogram lower left: J.J.B
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The original canvas has been very thinly relined. There is a line of discolored old varnish around top and sides, possibly where edges were covered by a previous frame. An area of slight abrasion at lower left edge. The paint surface has been very well retained and there is lovely detail throughout. A craquelure pattern can be seen in the sky, but this is not distracting. Under UV light: there is some retouching at lower left and lower right edges, and one tiny retouch in foreground between horses. This painting would benefit from a light cleaning of the yellowed edges mentioned above to even up the colors of the paint surface. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.
