Description

  • William Ashford, P.R.H.A.
  • A wooded landscape with a waterfall and a fisherman walking along a path
  • signed and dated lower right: WAshford 15
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

With The Brownstone Gallery, Brooklyn, NY;
From whom acquired by the uncle of the present owners in 1970.

Condition

The canvas appears to be unlined or very thinly relined, and the canvas support is stable. There are two minor vertical cracks of approximately three centimeters in the hillside background at left, and a third minor crack in the rock at lower center. The paint surface is a little dirty beneath an old varnish. The painting would benefit from a light clean and revarnish. An old retouching and filling to the aforementioned cracks could perhaps be attended to again. It is difficult to read the image under UV due to the old varnish, but there appears to be some old strengthening and retouching to the darks in the hillside at left. Offered in a simple carved gilt wood frame.
