Condition

Painting is on a single piece of wood. Panel is beveled, stable, and flat. Painting appears to be in beautiful condition and can certainly be hung in its current state. UV light reveals barely any retouches, with only a few tiny cosmetic strokes around the outer edges, and a couple tiny small touches in the horse. In a carved and gilt wood frame.

Elephant was the favorite shire horse (or draft horse) of Sir Henry Meux (1817-1883), who was a member of Parliament for Hertfordshire from 1847 to 1859 and the head of the London brewing firm, Meux and Co., which owned the famous Horse Shoe Brewery.
