Catalogue Note

This tranquil scene depicting the Virgin absorbed in her needlework, executed in the studio of Guido Reni, follows one of two variations on a design by the Bolognese master.  The present studio version follows Reni’s prototype formerly with Dickinson Roundell, London, and now in a private collection, in which the Virgin is dressed in a red robe and accompanied by three angels.1  The second variant, which was rediscovered only in 2006 and offered in these R ooms in 2012, shows the Virgin dressed in blue and accompanied by four angels rather than three.2
