Description

  • Willem van de Velde the Younger
  • A gathering of English ships, possibly depicting the Royal Prince
  • oil on canvas
  • 52 x 63 inches

Condition

The painting overall is in good condition, particularly for a work of this size, and presents a strong and impressive image, reading well beneath an old varnish. The uppermost flags are a little abraded, but the rest of the central ship is crisp and well preserved. The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. Inspection under UV reveals some older retouches scattered in the sky, some of which have slightly discolored and are faintly visible to the naked eye, but they do not distract in any way. There is retouching to a crack in the paint surface running the breadth of the painting horizontally, about 40 cm from the upper edge. The painting could benefit from a light surface clean and a revarnish, but this is dependent on taste, and it is otherwise ready to hang. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
