Description

  • armoured man on horseback
  • parcel-gilt and polychrome pine
  • Probably Austrian, Tyrol second half 15th century

Provenance

Mrs. Robert Tritton Godmershain, JLD Francois Antiques, Paris, 1987

Condition

There are general surface abrasions and losses throughout including losses to paint. Age cracks include: Horizontal crack through the center of the horse on his proper right side and horse's lower neck. Some "cracks" are in fact separately carved original pieces of wood that have been attached. Restorations appear to include: reattachment of tail (loose), cracks on horse's legs, 2 places on rider's proper left lower leg (with 1" Long loss), horn of saddle and reattachment of rider's proper right arm. The spear is of a later date. Overall nicely carved and decorative.
