Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This work has not been recently cleaned, but it does seem to have a fresh varnish. The canvas has a European lining. The paint layer is stable. The texture is attractive. Some of the shadowed areas of the architecture, particularly in the Rialto Bridge, have weakened over time. The dark lines delineating the windows and details are slightly weak. Some of the gondolas have probably been slightly strengthened. In the sky, there may be retouches beneath an old varnish that cannot be identified under ultraviolet light. To the naked eye, the condition in the sky seems to be very good, although there are probably a few restorations such as a vertical line above the clouds in the upper center.
