Description

  • Circle of Luca Signorelli
  • King David
  • tempera on panel, tondo, unframed.

Condition

Round wood panel is 1/2 inch thick and uncradled. There appears to be a diagonal join that runs from upper left to middle right. Overall the paint surface is very well preserved and there is very nice retention of detail and impasto especially in the hair, eyebrows, beard, and crown. Coloration is strong. Under UV: there is retouching all along the join; other very small, cosmetic retouches can be seen on the cheeks, nose, edges of hair, on right hand fingers and on left wrist. Others here and there in the background. This painting is in good state overall. It can be hung as is and presents a striking image.

Catalogue Note

While the author of this painting remains elusive, the influence of Luca Signorelli is evident in the treatment of the figure, reminiscent of the bearded apostle to the left of Christ in his signed altarpiece, The Communion of the Apostles of 1512, now in the Museo Diocesano, Cortona.1
