Description
- Jacob de Wit
- Allegory of astronomy
- signed lower right: JWit
- oil on canvas, en grisaille
Condition
The canvas appears to have an old glue relining. The paint surface is stable beneath a slightly yellowed varnish and a craquelure pattern consistent with its age with a few minor losses scattered along the upper edge and here and there in the putti. Inspection under UV reveals areas of filling and restoration scattered throughout the composition such as in the putti upper right and upper center. Some of these restorations have discolored with age and are visible to the naked eye, such as in the shoulder of the kneeling putto to the left of center.
Offered in a simply carved painted wood frame.
