Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has not recently been restored. While it could be hung as is, it would brighten if cleaned. The panel is made from two pieces of wood joined horizontally through the center. The reverse of the panel has a simple cradle that seems to be effective. Under ultraviolet light, retouches are visible in a few lines strengthening some of the darker colors in the clothing of the figures, in some of the background above the figures in the center of the right side, and in a spot or two in the upper center and upper right background. While a few other retouches would probably become apparent if the picture is cleaned, particularly in the softer colors of the background, cleaning would be worthwhile.
