Description

  • Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri
  • The Triumph of David
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

The canvas appears to be unlined. The image reads well and presents a strong image beneath an old slightly discolored varnish, and good detail is retained in areas, for example in floral headdress and costume of figure at right. Stretcher bar marks are visible along all edges. A tear is visible in the upper right background, with a few small associated losses. There are a few other scattered retouched repairs, for example in hair of figure at center, above her head, in her chin, in the upper left, in David's hip, and in chest of figure at right. The repairs have associated patches on the reverse of the canvas. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish. It also reveals areas of retouching to address aforementioned repairs as well as a few additional spots and areas of retouching scattered throughout, for example near the center of the upper edge in the lower right of the figures costume and a thin vertical line through Goliath's left the. The painting might benefit from a light clean, and the tear and some old repaired retouches could be attended to. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.
