The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's: This work is unlined, but it has one patch applied with wax in the lower left. There is quite visible cracking in the sky, particularly in the white clouds, and there is a scratch on the upper right edge. The canvas probably should be lined, which would eliminate the raised cracking and consolidate the paint layer. The patch would no longer be necessary. The paint layer could then be cleaned and retouched where necessary.
