Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. The picture is slightly slack on the stretcher. There is a yellowed unevenly applied varnish over the entire work. A fine web of craquelure and pigment separation visible, especially in the darks and the figures. Pulling and bumping of the canvas at the corners. A small puncture to the canvas with associated loss at lower center in the stairs. Under UV light, minor scattered dots and lines of retouching, mainly to address craquelure, are visible. The majority of the work is covered by a green fluorescing varnish and little can be discerned of the pictures surface.
