Catalogue Note
The Zip Necklace, a true icon of Van Cleef & Arpels, is the perfect example of the maison’s reputed creativity and capability to transform the everyday into exquisite jewels. In 1938, the Duchess of Windsor suggested the idea of the Zip necklace to Van Cleef & Arpels' artistic director, Renée Puissant. She designed a zipper composed of diamonds mounted in platinum but it took several years to perfect one of the most prestigious design of the Maison. In 1951, the first model of a Zip necklace was presented to the public; it was an adjustable model that could be worn open around the neck or closed as a bracelet. This legendary design has been revived by Van Cleef & Arpels in recent years and the example offered in this sale is an elegant interpretation of this iconic piece, a testament to the maison’s dexterity and everlasting aesthetics.
