Catalogue Note
FROM THE FIRST PRINTSHOP IN VENICE. This is one of two editions of The City of God printed in 1470, following editions in 1467 and 1468; this is the first Venetian edition. Johannes de Spira (John of Speyer) was granted a five-year privilege in 1469 which gave him a monopoly over printing in Venice, but his death shortly after, in 1470, opened the Venetian market to other players. Johannes was succeeded by his brother Vindelinus, who continued printing up to 1477.
The verse colophon tells us that Johannes had printed a Cicero and a Pliny in 100 copies in the space of three months, and that his brother Vindelinus completed the book he had begun, i.e. this edition of Augustine. It is the first book in which Vindelinus is mentioned by name.
