Catalogue Note

Jack Kerouac and Robert Frank were on the road to Florida in 1958 when this photograph was taken through the car's unwashed windshield. Kerouac is the famous author of "On the road" considered as the manifesto of the Beat Generation and which influenced the movie genre of the road trip.

He described this very moment with Robert Frank in a story published in 1970 in the Evergreen Review: "In darkening day, rain coming on the road, lights already on at 3 PM, mist descending on Highway 40, we see the insect swoop of modern sulphur lamps, the distant haze of forgotten trees"
